Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre was founded in 2020 by Rachel E. Cargle to amplify marginalized voices. As Akron’s only Black-owned, woman-owned, and queer-owned bookstore, we curate books that challenge perspectives and inspire change.
With shelves and events at Akron’s Northside Marketplace, and workshops and meetups at The Well CDC, we’re more than a bookstore—creating space for conversation, learning, and connection through the power of storytelling.
Read Books. Meet People. Make Friends.

Founded in 2020 by Rachel E. Cargle
Founded by Rachel E. Cargle, Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre’s catalog highlights, amplifies and celebrates the work of QTBIPOC writers, who are often excluded from traditional cultural, social & academic canons. Through curated collections of own voices' narratives, EBWC seeks to educate & re-shape the lens of readers as they see themselves and how they view the world.
A percentage of Elizabeth’s proceeds go to support the work of The Loveland Foundation, Inc, providing free therapy for Black women, girls and gender non-conforming individuals.
